Offred, the female protagonist responds, “Better? I say, in a small voice. How can he think this is better?” She has lost her child, her husband, her name, and her autonomy. She’s constantly monitored. She can’t read, work, own property, or move freely. For her personally, everything that made her life meaningful has been stripped away.
His answer—“Better never means better for everyone… It always means worse, for some”—is chilling.
